Lisa Quinones-Fontanez

Lisa Quinones-Fontanez is a secretary by day, grad student/blog writer by night and Mami round the clock. When Lisa’s son, Norrin, was diagnosed with autism in May 2008, she found herself in a world she did not understand. She soon realized that the Latino experience with autism was rarely represented in mainstream media. In 2010 Lisa founded the blog AutismWonderland. AutismWonderland chronicles her family journey with autism and shares local resources for children/families with special needs.

AutismWonderland is #10 on the Babble 2012 Top 30 Autism Blogs for Parents and in 2011 AutismWonderland was nominated for Parents.com Best Special Needs Blog. In the fall of 2012, Lisa has been recognized as a Yahoo Women Who Shine nomineeAnd at the 2012 LATISM National Conference, Lisa was recognized as  the Best Latin@ Health Blogger.

Lisa’s writing has been featured several blog sites including Being Latino, Bronx Mama, Mommy Maestra and the Tiki Tiki Blog and is a regular contributor on Parents.com.

In between work, school, blog writing and advocating for Norrin, Lisa is also working on a historical fiction novel (working title) A Thousand Branches. A chapter excerpt (The Last Time of Anything) from A Thousand Branches received Honorable Mention in Glimmertrain's Family Matters October 2010 competition.

The above is my 'official' bio. I don't typically talk about myself in third person.

So here's the unofficial bio:

Hi! I'm Lisa. I am mediocre wife, exhausted working mom, frazzled grad student & street savvy Latina. I write about life, love, special education & autism in The Bronx. I love Star Wars and the Food Network. And I am a firm believer that everything tastes better with bacon.

And just so we're totally clear.

I am a mother to a kid with autism and a writer.

I am not a: lawyer, professional advocate, special education teacher, psychologist, therapist (of any kind) or social worker.

I'm just a mom - taking it day by day.

This is a personal blog. The opinions expressed here represent my own and not those of any employer.

AutismWonderland Characters:

          The Boy
Summer 2009
Norrin is my 6.5 year old son. He was diagnosed with Autistic Disorder and Global Developmental Delay in May 2008 when he was 2 years 5 months. Through Early Intervention, love, hope and a lot of patience, we've watched him thrive.  He continues to surprise us day after day. Similar to the White Rabbit, he is constantly running and we spend most of our time chasing after him.

The Husband
My partner for the last 12 years. Joseph is just a really nice guy with an enormous amount of patience. He is extremely supportive of everything I do; I could not do any of this without him. Joseph keeps me grounded and always reminds me of the bright side.
